Gingrich: Dems Teach The Unemployed To Prefer Government-Funded Poverty Over Honest Work | Political Correction

In an email to supporters yesterday, Newt Gingrich blamed Democrats for high unemployment and argued that "the extension of unemployment benefits has given people a perverse incentive to stay on unemployment rather than accept a job." Gingrich cynically warns that Democrats are making jobless Americans "get so used to being unproductive that they are willing to accept welfare indefinitely instead of taking a job." Gingrich is just the latest in a long line of Republicans to attack the unemployed for political gain. In reality, unemployment checks average about $300 per week, and cherry-picked anecdotes about "indefinite welfare" ignore the real source of high unemployment: a severe economic crisis brought about by Republican mismanagement.
Gingrich: Companies Aren't Finding Qualified Hires And It's The Democrats' Fault

Gingrich Cited Wall Street Journal Article In Arguing American Workers Prefer Unemployment Checks Over Wages. In an email to Human Events subscribers, Gingrich wrote:

An article in the Wall Street Journal Monday painted a frustrating picture of the joblessness situation, showing that, despite our high unemployment, many firms are having trouble filling job openings. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, if job openings were getting filled at a normal rate, the unemployment rate would be 6.8% instead of 9.5%.

So there are actually many jobs out there that need to be filled. Yet, in the worst recession since the Great Depression, many employers can't make hires.

The article cites several reasons for this phenomenon, a few of which are long term trends such as our education system not producing enough qualified engineers. But others factors fall squarely on the backs of this administration and Congress.

For instance, the extension of unemployment benefits has given people a perverse incentive to stay on unemployment rather than accept a job. The part-owner of a machine parts company, Mechanical Devices, is looking for as many as 40 new engineers, but is quoted in the article as saying many applicants at job fairs were "just going through the motions so they could collect their unemployment checks." The article also quotes an engineer who admits he turned down more than a dozen offers because the salary would have been less than he made on welfare.

This story encapsulates the problem of the long-term unemployed. The depth and length of this recession is at risk of creating a permanent pool of unemployed Americans, who get so used to being unproductive that they are willing to accept welfare indefinitely instead of taking a job.

Republican Lawmakers Agree With Gingrich: Unemployed Americans Are Lazy And Stubborn

Below are just a few of the many examples of Republicans blaming unemployment on laziness brought on by government checks. For a more complete list, see our full fact check HERE(politicalcorrection.org/factch...1007200002) and read more about the GOP's rhetoric on unemployment HERE(politicalcorrection.org/blog/2...1007270004).

Reality Check: There Are About Five Unemployed Workers For Every Job Opening...

Depart Of Labor Statistics Show There Are At Least Five Job Seekers For Every Opening. According to the New York Times:

In June, there were fewer than five unemployed workers for each job opening, according to new Labor Department data. That is a less discouraging ratio than earlier this year, but the improvement may mainly be a result of workers who have given up looking for a job.

The chart below shows the jobless worker/job opening ratio going back to 2000, the earliest year that the Labor Department keeps data on job openings.

New York Times: Ratio Of Jobs To Job Seekers Is Probably Higher Because Many Jobless Are Not Counted In The Labor Dept. Statistics. According to the New York Times: "As of June, there were 4.98 workers per opening, compared with 5.09 the previous month. Both the number of job openings and the number of unemployed workers fell from May to June. The number of unemployed workers fell not because more people got jobs, but because hundreds of thousands of people dropped out of the labor force. In fact the labor force participation rate - that is, the portion of working-age people who choose to work or actively search for work - is currently at its lowest rate since 1984." [New York Times, 8/11/10, emphasis added]
...And Economists Agree: Unemployment Benefits Have A Tiny Effect On Unemployment Duration

Key Researcher On Unemployment Benefits Says His Old Findings On Unemployment Benefits Are Outdated. According to the bipartisan Joint Economic Committee: "While earlier research suggested that the unemployment insurance program in the 1970s and 1980s had important disincentive effects, the current consensus is that these dated studies overstated the effects of unemployment insurance benefits on job search behavior. The older studies noted a jump in the fraction of workers who found a job just before they exhausted their benefits. In contrast, in testimony before the Joint Economic Committee, the author of one of the seminal papers in this earlier wave of research, Dr. Lawrence Katz, said that 'the most compelling research shows only modest impacts of UI extensions on the search effort and duration of unemployment of unemployment insurance recipients.' [...] Katz pointed out that these studies overstate the overall impact of unemployment insurance benefits on the length of unemployment spells 'by ignoring the spillover effects of shorter unemployment spells for the other unemployed workers not receiving UI benefits.'" What is going on in America today is not a battle between socialism and capitalism, but a struggle between democracy and corporate fascism. This is the explanation for Gingrich's disdain for the working class. He rightly sees that concern for workers is one of the last barriers that prevents "we the people" from absolute domination by the forces that destroyed the economy in 2008.

Why don't Republicans like Newt come and admit they hate any social prorgam that benefits the working class.

When is the last time that Newt Gingrich did honest work? He lives of his guaranteed congressional pension and cadillac health care.

We the People should only be so lucky to have the Socialists take over
the USA. The top 5 countries in this entire world where the most people
are admittedly the happiest are the Germanic countries of Scandanavia,
the U.K. of the Netherlands, etc. They all have Democratic Socialism well
established since WW2. Socialism would equate to the American Dream
because most Americans are basicly honest people who would rather
work, earn a living wage, and have their health care/pensions guaranteed.
Contrary to the evil Nazi propaganda Gingrich spouts out. His former wife calls
him a pig, which he is. A sleezy, cheap hack policitian & media ho Gingrich
has to be the poster boy of hypocrisy. Like the parasite he is, Gingrich lives
off the pension & cadillac health care claimed from the taxes of those he spits
on and lies about. For in less worse times, it was those very people he
denounces who voted him into an office he sought because the pay/benefits
were better than anything of low quality like him could earn in the private sector.

I've talked to people who call themselves Conservative. Some of them may be
good hearted. I would not dispute that. But being of very modest means they
have the most ignorant views of Conservativism. The uber rich are Conservatives.
They would laugh like the devil upon hearing the poor's misguided beliefs
about the " Nobility of Capitalism " Capitalisms ultimate goal is Slavery.
Socialism's ultimate goal is anything but Communism. It's the Democracy that
was guaranteed us by the founding fathers. And the dream carried forward by
every generation of honest Americans desiring to improve the fate of their kids.
Someday I'll shit on the graves of diseased parasitical low lives like Gingrich.
Not exactly an eye for an eye. But certainly a turd for a turd.

I wonder to republicans even try to tell the truth or are they just winging it every min of every day

I think they have gone into such a panic about having a black president that they are not able to censor what they are saying anymore.

It is a bit scary, I do not like the GOP, but I do believe there needs to be a balancing factor in the government and they seem incapable of serving that role without hysterics and personal attacks on large segments of the population.

I keep saying that. The real reason the bible belt conservatives and tea party members hate Obama is they just cant stand the fact that a black, moderately liberal man was elected President. They seriously cannot mentally face it in an honest fashion. Cognitive Dissonance in action.

We voted Obama into office because we were tired of Bush. The "Change" we expected turns out to be crap and socialism. I don't care what color the man is. He is decietful and arrogant. He is doing more damage to this country in less than two years than we will be able to clean up in 20.

You don't know what socialism is, the deficit is not substantially larger than it was under Bush, we're fighting two wars and bailing out our own economy and the man boasts and brags about nothing, so he's not arrogant.

The deficit is much larger, are you kidding? Now we have to pay for national health care! And I'm not defending GW, his deficits were outrageous too, no doubt, George never saw a spending bill he didn't like. We have to stop spending money and I don't care who or of what party it takes to do it!

That's the most head in the sand statement ever made. George Bush was and is continually attacked with pure venom on this site. Keep your mouth shut if you don't know what you are talking about, because I am in no way whatsoever a racist. You're just an ignorant fool if you think so.
by NotFooled (+85p) | 20 months ago
toyotabedzrock:
I agree we need a balancing factor on government, but the modern day GOP can no longer serve that function. The reason being their is no longer any distinction between them and corporate America, they are literally, one and the same. What's insidious is that they also try to set themselves up as Americas moral guardians, in essence establishing corporate America up as our guiding moral force. (yeah, I'm laughing too)

I can't think of any other corruption that so directly targets heart and soul of American democracy than that represented by Gingrich. Communism was a joke compared to the destructive potential of the forces supported by this hypocritical fool.
by Mark701 (+285p) | 20 months ago
NotFooled:
You are right this is a very lefty site in most cases but out in the current political world you only hear bush's name to blame him for something and any more it is just as likely to be a pub doing the blaming. However I dont recall Bush being called a liar by a congressman in the middle of a national speech or being accused as a illegal immigrant.
by mik661 (+225p) | 20 months ago
mik661:
If all Americans had to worry about (in the sea of incompetence and
impassivity they're adrift on) were some Rep. calling a President a liar...
Considering how out of touch they are spending $14 Billion on themselves
annualy, something which should be more alien than illegal immigrants...
then our molehills would be only molehills.
